The Coupler: Sizing, Seating and the Latch
Three separate things have to be true before a coupler is safe, and only one of them is obvious.
The sizes must match exactly. A coupler is stamped with the ball diameter it fits. A 1-7/8" coupler will sit down on a 1-7/8" ball and nothing else. The failure mode people fear is a small coupler on a big ball, which will not close โ but the dangerous one is the reverse. A 2" coupler placed on a 1-7/8" ball will appear to latch, will tow out of the driveway, and can lift off over a bump because the ball is too small to fill the socket. The coupler must be fully seated before the latch closes. The socket has to swallow the ball completely, so that the ball's equator is inside the socket rather than resting on its lip. A coupler perched on top of the ball can still take the latch in some designs, which is exactly why the tug test exists.
The latch must be closed and pinned. Close the latch, then fit the safety pin or a lock through it. A latch that vibrates open on a rough road has removed the only thing holding the coupler down. The pin costs a few dollars and is the cheapest insurance on the whole rig.
One habit worth building: after latching, put a hand under the trailer tongue and lift hard. The trailer should not come off the ball. If the tongue lifts free, the coupler was never seated.
Safety Chains: Cross Them, and Leave Almost No Slack
This is the step most often done wrong, and it is one of the few points where Ford, General Motors and a trailer manufacturer all publish the same instruction in almost the same words.
Ford's RV & Trailer Towing Guide states it as a rule with a reason attached:
> Cross chains under the trailer tongue to prevent the tongue from contacting the ground if a separation occurs. Allow only enough slack to permit full turning โ be sure they do not drag on the pavement.
Chevrolet's Trailering Guide gives the same instruction, and Jayco's towable manual turns it into a procedure: cross the left chain under the coupler and attach it to the right mounting slot, then repeat with the right chain into the left slot, with equal slack on each.
The crossing is not decorative. Crossed chains form a cradle under the coupler. If the coupler ever comes off the ball, the tongue drops into that cradle instead of into the pavement โ and a tongue that digs into asphalt at speed is what turns a separation into a rollover.
Three details that decide whether the cradle works:
* Slack is a tradeoff with one correct answer. Enough to turn at full lock, and not one link more. Too tight and the chains bind or snap in a tight turn; too loose and they drag, wear through, and cannot hold the tongue up.
* Never let them touch the ground. A dragging chain grinds itself thin over a single trip and will not be there when it is needed.
* Attach to the hitch, not to the bumper. With a frame-mounted hitch, Ford directs owners to attach the chains to the frame-mounted hitch following the hitch manufacturer's recommendations.

The Breakaway Switch: Where the Lanyard Must Not Go
A breakaway switch is a small pull-pin device on the trailer A-frame, or near the pinbox on a fifth wheel. If the trailer separates from the tow vehicle, the lanyard pulls the pin and the trailer applies its own brakes.
Jayco's manual is unusually direct about the mistake people make:
> When hitching your RV, attach the breakaway switch lanyard to a permanent part of the tow vehicle, not to removable parts like the hitch ball.
Clipping the lanyard to the ball mount, the ball itself, or a safety-chain loop defeats the entire device. In a real separation those parts leave with the trailer, the pin never pulls, and the trailer rolls away with no brakes. It goes on the vehicle's frame or a dedicated hitch loop that stays with the truck.
Two more things about the switch that first-time owners routinely miss:
* It needs a charged battery on the trailer. The switch closes a circuit; the trailer's own battery supplies the current that applies the brakes. A trailer with a dead or absent battery has a breakaway switch that does nothing at all. Wiring, Lights and the Tests Before You Move

Then run three tests, in this order. All three take about two minutes together.
1. The light test. Someone stands behind while you work through running lights, left indicator, right indicator, brakes and reverse. Working alone, GM's Advanced Trailering System includes a Trailer Light Test that cycles brake lights, indicators and reverse lights so one person can walk around and look. Failing that, back the trailer up to a wall or a shop window at dusk and use the reflection.
2. The brake test. Chevrolet's trailering safety checklist gives the method: with electric trailer brakes, test them by manually engaging the brake controller while the vehicle is moving slowly. You should feel the trailer pull the rig back. Then do the walk-around. Chevrolet's published safety checklist is a good script: hitch and platform, hitch nuts and bolts, mirror adjustments, safety chains, vehicle and trailer lights, sway-control device fitted and working if one is required, tire pressure on both the tow vehicle and the trailer, brakes tested, breakaway connected, and all loads secure.
One more, from Ford, that belongs to the first hour rather than the driveway: after about 50 miles, stop somewhere protected and re-check the hitch attachment, the lights and electrical connections, and the trailer wheel lug nuts. Hitching Alone, and What Changes for Other Hitch Types
Hitching by yourself is normal and does not require a second person, only a way to see the ball.
* Back up with the tailgate down where the truck allows it, so the ball is visible over the bed rail.
* Put a marker on the ball โ a length of PVC pipe, a tennis ball on a stick, a strip of bright tape โ and line it up in the mirror.
* Use the reversing camera's guideline if the truck has one, then get out and check. Cameras foreshorten distance badly at the last foot.
* Back up in short bursts and get out to look. Two extra checks cost thirty seconds; a coupler dropped onto a tailgate costs a panel.
* Raise the tongue higher than you think necessary. It is far easier to lower a coupler onto a ball than to discover you are an inch low with the truck already in position.
