1. Tow rating: can it pull it?
The published maximum trailer weight for your exact engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, and drivetrain. It is the check people run first and the one that fails least often on modern trucks.
Check a real truck, SUV, camper, boat, utility trailer, or RV setup against tow rating, payload, GCWR, tongue weight, and 80% planning margin. Use loaded weights, not brochure dry weights, whenever possible.
Tongue weight, passengers, cargo, and hitch equipment all consume payload. This is where many camper setups fail.
GCWR checks the whole loaded rig. More people and cargo reduce available trailer weight.
The advertised rating matters, but it assumes a specific configuration and does not replace payload or GCWR checks.
This tool answers one question â can this vehicle tow this trailer â by testing the setup against four limits in turn and reporting whichever runs out first. That order matters: a setup that passes the tow rating can still fail on payload, and the failure that matters is the first one, not the average.

Tongue weight lands on the tow vehicle alongside every passenger, every bag, and the hitch itself. On family setups this is usually the limit that binds, and it comes from the label in your door jamb rather than a brochure.
GCWR caps the loaded vehicle and loaded trailer together. Subtract your actual loaded vehicle weight from GCWR and compare what is left with the loaded trailer. A heavy crew cab can consume this margin before the trailer is coupled.
The receiver label carries its own maximum trailer weight and tongue weight. The certification label carries a separate GAWR for each axle. The tire sidewall carries a load rating. Any of the three can be lower than the vehicle's tow rating.
A pass with 20 lb to spare and a pass with 900 lb to spare are different situations. Seeing the margin on each limit tells you how much room you have for the gear you have not packed yet.
Many experienced towers plan to about 80% of the binding limit. It is a convention rather than a rule, and it exists because grades, altitude, heat, crosswinds, and imperfect loading all consume margin that a calculation does not show.
A crew-cab half-ton: 11,300 lb tow rating, 15,000 lb GCWR, 1,684 lb payload on the door label, 5,400 lb curb weight. Two adults, two children, 200 lb of gear, a 90 lb weight-distribution hitch, and a 7,000 lb loaded trailer at 13% tongue weight.

Two of the four checks pass comfortably and the setup still fails, because payload is over by 116 lb. Leaving 120 lb of gear at home, or moving it into the trailer, brings it inside â and that is a decision you can only make if you know which limit is binding.
Less than the brochure figure, in almost every case. Start with the tow rating for your exact configuration, then subtract what your passengers, cargo, and tongue weight take out of payload and GCWR. The lowest remaining margin is your real answer.
Because the tow rating is only one of four limits. Payload is the most common failure: a trailer well inside the tow rating can put more tongue weight on the vehicle than its door label allows.
Payload and GVWR are on the tire and loading label and certification label in the driver's door jamb. GCWR and the tow rating are in the owner's manual or the manufacturer's towing guide for your configuration. Trailer GVWR is on the trailer data plate.
Loaded weight. Travel trailers typically gain 1,000-1,800 lb between the brochure and the road once water, propane, batteries, and gear are aboard.
A planning convention that keeps loads at roughly 80% of the binding limit, leaving margin for grades, heat, wind, and loading changes. It is not a legal requirement.
It redistributes tongue weight across the axles and restores steering and braking balance, but tongue weight still counts in full against payload. Some manufacturers publish a higher tow rating when one is fitted â check your towing guide.
