Trailer Hitch Classes and Ball Sizes - A hitch class reliably tells you the receiver opening size. It does not reliably tell you the weight rating: two major manufacturers publish Class 3 hitches at 10,000 lb and 3,500 lb. This guide gives each maker's own figures, the ball sizing rules, and the one number that actually governs.

Fast Answer: The Class Tells You the Opening, Not the Rating

A hitch class reliably tells you the size of the receiver opening. It is a much less reliable guide to weight capacity than the charts circulating online suggest. Here is the problem, from two major manufacturers' own current product pages:

Same class number. Same receiver size. Nearly three times the rating. In fact that Draw-Tite Class III carries exactly the figures CURT publishes for its Class 2. So the rule to work by: * Use the class to find the receiver opening — 1-1/4", 2" or 2-1/2". * Read the rating off the label on the hitch itself, not off any chart. * Then apply the lowest limit in the chain, which may be the vehicle rather than the hitch. Why Manufacturers Disagree

The classes are an industry convention rather than a numbered standard with fixed bands, and the manufacturers are fairly open about it. CURT describes its heaviest line as sitting outside the scheme entirely: "CURT Xtra Duty hitches begin a class of their own, beyond class 4 and beyond anything the standards dictate." And within a single manufacturer, one class covers several ratings. Draw-Tite sells Class 3 hitches at 2,000, 3,500 and 4,500 lb gross trailer weight. CURT qualifies its own Class 3 figure with "depending on the specific vehicle and application". The reason is that a receiver hitch is engineered for a specific vehicle. The class describes the receiver opening and the product family; the rating is set by what that vehicle's frame and mounting points will take. A hidden hitch for a crossover and a heavy-duty hitch for a full-size truck can both wear a "Class 3" badge and a 2" opening while being rated thousands of pounds apart. Both makers say their hitches are tested to SAE J684 — Draw-Tite states "DRAW-TITE trailer hitches are tested to exceed V-5 and SAE J684 standards" — but that is a statement about testing, not a published table of class bands. One consequence worth stating plainly: the widely-circulated figure of "Class 3 = 8,000 lb / 800 lb" matches neither of the manufacturers checked here. If you have seen that number, it did not come from CURT or Draw-Tite.

One Manufacturer's Published Classes

Since there is no universal table, here is one maker's, clearly attributed. These are CURT's own published figures, each taken from that class's own page. Treat them as CURT's, not as the industry's.

Two quirks inside CURT's own line-up are worth noticing, because they undercut the idea of a neat ladder: * Class 3 and Class 4 share the same weight-carrying figures — both 10,000 lb and 1,000 lb. The difference appears only once weight distribution is fitted. * There are two different Class 5 products with different receiver sizes — 2" on Xtra Duty and 2-1/2" on Commercial Duty. Any chart printing a single "Class 5 = 2-1/2 inch" row is wrong for half of CURT's own Class 5 range. Receiver openings are the part that does generalise: 1-1/4" on Classes 1 and 2, 2" on Classes 3 and 4, and 2-1/2" on the heaviest commercial hitches.

Ball Sizes, and Why Diameter Is Not Capacity

Diameter and capacity are separate facts. Both are stamped on the ball — the chart on the wall of the store is not.
Trailer balls come in four common diameters. CURT's published capacity ranges show why you cannot infer a rating from a diameter:

Note the overlap: a 2" ball spans 3,500 to 12,000 lb and a 2-5/16" ball spans 6,000 to 30,000 lb. A 2-5/16" ball is not automatically stronger than a 2" one. The capacity is stamped on the ball — read it. The diameter must match the coupler exactly. CURT states that "the ball diameter should match the coupler size of your trailer", and Draw-Tite points out where to find the requirement: "The ball diameter required is stamped into the coupler handle or body." This is not a place for approximation. A 2" ball and a 2-5/16" coupler are close enough in size to appear to connect and latch, and are not a secure connection. Check the stamp on the coupler, then check the stamp on the ball, every time you change trailers. Shanks come in 3/4", 1" and 1-1/4" diameters, torqued to 160, 250 and 450 ft-lb respectively per Draw-Tite. The shank hole in the ball mount has to match the ball's shank, and the nut needs to be properly torqued rather than merely tight.

The Two Ratings on a Receiver

Many receivers carry two sets of figures — a weight-carrying (WC) rating and a higher weight-distributing (WD) one. CURT's Class 4 is the clean example: 10,000 lb and 1,000 lb weight-carrying, rising to 14,000 lb and 1,400 lb with weight distribution fitted. The higher figure applies only when a weight distribution system is installed. A weight distribution system spreads the trailer's tongue load across the tow vehicle's axles and the trailer's axles rather than concentrating it behind the rear axle, and the hitch is rated accordingly for that condition. But do not assume weight distribution always buys a higher number. Two verified counter-examples: CURT's own Class 5 Xtra Duty can be used with weight distribution "though the GTW capacity remains at 17,000 lbs"* — no increase at all. The Draw-Tite Class III hitch quoted earlier states flatly: "No weight distribution kits can be used on this specific trailer hitch."* So read your own hitch's label rather than assuming the pattern holds. Choosing in Practice

Five steps, in order. 1. Start with the vehicle, not the hitch. Find the tow rating and payload for your exact configuration. If the vehicle is the limit — it usually is — a bigger hitch changes nothing. 2. Buy the hitch made for your vehicle. Receiver hitches are vehicle-specific. The right question is not "what class do I need" but "what does this manufacturer offer for my year, make and model, and what is it rated for". 3. Read that specific hitch's rating, both weight-carrying and weight-distributing if it has both. 4. Match the ball to the coupler stamp, and check the ball's own capacity stamp against the loaded trailer weight. 5. Check the tongue weight separately. A trailer riding nose-up shifts weight rearward and encourages sway; nose-down overloads the rear axle.
