A fifth wheel puts a far larger share of its weight on the tow vehicle than a bumper-pull trailer does, and it puts it in the bed rather than behind the axle. This tool converts loaded trailer weight into pin weight and shows what that leaves of the truck's payload once the hitch and passengers are counted.
Because the coupling sits over or ahead of the rear axle rather than behind it, fifth wheels carry a much higher share on the tow vehicle. A 12,000 lb fifth wheel at 20% puts 2,400 lb into the bed — more than most half-tons can carry in total.
A rail-mounted fifth-wheel hitch is 150-250 lb of hardware bolted into the bed, and it uses payload before the trailer is even coupled. Sliding hitches for short beds weigh more still.
Pin weight sits close to the rear axle, so the rear GAWR and the rear tire load rating usually run out before GVWR and long before GCWR. Weigh the rear axle loaded and compare against the certification label.
A short bed leaves little room between the pin and the cab, and a sharp turn can bring the trailer's front cap into contact. Sliding hitches and extended pin boxes address this, at the cost of more weight.
The 15-25% range is wide because floor plans differ. A front-living or front-kitchen layout sits at the top of it; storing heavy gear in a rear garage pulls it down — but too little pin weight makes the rig unstable.
For a typical 12,000 lb fifth wheel you are looking for a door-label payload above about 3,000 lb, which is three-quarter-ton territory. Half-tons handle only the lightest fifth wheels once passengers are aboard.

The trailer is comfortably inside the tow rating of both trucks. Payload is what separates them: the same fifth wheel that overloads a half-ton by nearly 1,200 lb leaves a three-quarter-ton with a usable cushion.
Typically 15-25% of loaded trailer weight, with 20% a common planning figure. Bumper-pull trailers are 10-15% by comparison.
Take 20% of the loaded trailer weight, add about 200 lb for the hitch, then add everyone and everything riding in the truck. A 12,000 lb fifth wheel needs roughly 3,000-3,200 lb.
Only a light one. With about 2,000 lb of payload and a 200 lb hitch, a half-ton supports a loaded fifth wheel of roughly 7,500-9,500 lb once passengers are counted.
It counts against payload and against GCWR. The trailer's full loaded weight is what you compare with the tow rating.
Pin weight lands almost entirely on the rear axle. GVWR covers the whole truck while GAWR covers one axle, so the rear can be over its limit while the total still looks acceptable.
