Can You Increase Payload Capacity - Not on a truck you have already bought. Airbags and helper springs fix sag and improve control, and every major manufacturer of them says plainly that they do not raise your GVWR. Here is what actually sets the number, who is allowed to change it, and the levers that genuinely work.
The Short Answer

Airbags, helper springs, stiffer leaves, bigger tires and a levelling kit all change how the truck sits and feels under load. None of them changes the payload figure on the yellow label, because that figure is not a description of the springs. It is a manufacturer's rating of the whole vehicle, and it is fixed once the truck reaches a retail buyer.
Two precise points, because this subject attracts a lot of confident nonsense:
* Fitting the parts is not illegal. Federal rules on modification bind manufacturers, dealers and repair businesses โ not an owner working on their own truck. What owner modifications cannot do is change the certified rating.
* The rating is not immutable in principle. A final-stage manufacturer or a registered alterer genuinely can assign a different GVWR โ but only before the vehicle's first retail sale, and only with evidence that it still meets the safety standards at the new rating. After that first sale the number stays with the vehicle.
So the honest framing is not "nothing can ever change a GVWR". It is that by the time you own the truck, the number is settled โ and the practical route to more payload is a different truck, or less weight.

The Manufacturers Say It Themselves
This is the part worth reading, because the companies selling these products have every commercial reason to claim otherwise โ and all of them decline to.
Firestone Ride-Rite, answering "Does this allow my truck to carry more weight?":
"Absolutely not. Only the vehicle manufacturer can set the GVWR. Even with the air springs, you have the same brakes, axles, bearings and frame stiffness, which in part determines the vehicle's load capability. Ride-Rite air springs simply allow you to carry the maximum capacity of your truck more comfortably and without suspension sag or the poor handling that comes with it."
Air Lift, answering "Will adding air springs increase the Weight Rating of my vehicle?":
"No. Adding air springs will not change the Weight Rating (GVWR, GCWR, GAWR) of your vehicle. Our air springs simply increase your suspension's ability to support heavy loads."
SuperSprings, the most categorical of the six:
"No, nothing can increase your GVWR. The GVWR of your vehicle is set by the manufacturer and it cannot change and you should never exceed your vehicle's GVWR. SuperSprings and all other helper springs are intended to help level loads, not increase GVWR."
Hellwig, whose published question names the exact belief โ "Make my 1/2 ton a 3/4 ton?":
"We can not change the GVWR of any vehicle with the addition of a helper spring or air kit. Brakes, tires, wheels and axle ratings along with many other factors determine any particular vehicles GVWR."
Timbren: "You cannot exceed the manufacturer's axle rating or GVW rating of the vehicle." RoadActive Suspension: "No, RoadActive Suspension does not change your truck's factory payload rating."
But be fair to the products. SuperSprings also publishes that its coil products "increase the capacity of the coil springs by 15% to 30%" โ and that is not a contradiction. A component can gain capacity while the vehicle's certified rating does not move. That distinction is the whole subject.

Who Is Actually Allowed to Change a GVWR
There is a lawful path. It just does not run through your driveway.
Federal rules recognise a short list of parties who may assign or modify a vehicle's ratings, and NHTSA's Chief Counsel has stated the boundary directly:
"NHTSA has long taken the position that the only parties who can assign or modify a vehicle's GVWR are the original manufacturer, a final stage manufacturer, or an alterer."
"a person who makes modifications to a used vehicle (i.e., a vehicle that has already been purchased for purposes other than resale) does not qualify as an 'alterer'"
And, decisively:
"the originally assigned GVWR remains with the vehicle throughout its service life"
The counter-case is real and worth stating plainly: NTEA confirms that "GVWR and gross axle weight ratings (GAWRs) provided by the original vehicle manufacturer can be changed by a final-stage manufacturer or alterer" โ but adds the condition that "there must be testing, analysis or documentation to establish compliance with all applicable Federal/Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the new rating." In practice the brake standard is what blocks an upward change on a finished truck.
So a GVWR is not a law of physics. It is a certification, it can be assigned by someone qualified to take responsibility for it, and that window closes when the truck is first sold to a retail buyer.

Tires Are the Clearest Case
Tires are where the misunderstanding is easiest to correct, because the rule is written down.
Federal safety standard FMVSS 110 requires that the sum of the load ratings of the tires on an axle be at least that axle's GAWR. It is a floor, not a lever.
Fit tires with a higher load rating and you have satisfied that requirement with margin to spare. You have not raised the GAWR, because the axle, the springs, the wheels, the brakes and the frame are all unchanged โ and the rating was set by whichever of those is weakest. The NTEA example above shows a real axle where the tires already exceeded the rating by 410 lb and the rating did not move.
Where better tires genuinely help:
* If your current tires are the weakest link, upgrading removes a real hazard even though the rating is unchanged.
* Load range matters at pressure. A tire's rating applies at a specified cold inflation pressure, and running it soft means it is not carrying its rated load.
* Fitting passenger-car tires to a truck actually reduces usable capacity: the standard requires their load rating be divided by 1.10 before it counts toward the GAWR.

What Genuinely Increases What You Can Carry
Four things move the needle. Only one of them involves a shop.
1. Remove weight you are already carrying. Every pound of accessory is a pound of payload spent, and none of it is in the door-label figure because it was fitted after the label was printed. A hard tonneau, a toolbox, a steel bumper and a topper together can account for several hundred pounds. Divide any of those by 0.13 and you have the trailer weight it costs you.
2. Move load off the truck. Weight in the trailer ahead of its axles is carried by the trailer, not by you โ within reason, since moving too much forward raises tongue weight and puts it straight back on the truck. Passengers in a second vehicle is the blunt version of the same idea.
3. Fit a weight distribution hitch โ for axle distribution, not capacity. It moves load off the rear axle onto the front axle and the trailer's axles. That can bring a rear axle back under its GAWR, which is a real and common failure. It does not change GVWR or payload, and the hitch itself is 90 to 100 lb of payload. 4. Buy the right configuration. This is the only one that changes the printed number. So why fit airbags at all? Because sag, headlight aim, bump-stop contact and vague steering are real problems, and air springs genuinely fix them. A truck loaded to 95% of its rating is more pleasant and more controllable with them than without. That is worth buying. It is simply not extra capacity.
